January 22nd thru April 11th - The Berman Museum of Art opens Edward Burtynsky: Min(d)ing the Landscape

The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College will exhibit the powerfully alluring images of award-winning Canadian environmental photographer Edward Burtynksy, who challenges us to reflect on the material manifestations of often devastating human interventions in the natural landscape.
EDWARD BURTYNSKY: MIN(D)ING THE LANDSCAPE will open Jan. 22, and run through April 11, in the Main Gallery. An opening reception is scheduled for Jan. 28 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

February 4th thru April 15th - Pottstown Family Center offering free income tax preparation

The Pottstown Family Center is offering free basic income tax preparation to low-to-moderate income individuals ($49,000 and below) through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. 
Appointments are required.  VITA appointments are available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and select Saturday mornings through Thursday, April 15.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call Family Services at 610-326-1610. 
The Pottstown Family Center is located inside Family Services’ Pottstown Office, located at 1976 East High Street, Pottstown. 

February 4th thru April 21st - Senator Mensch announced applications are being accepted for state grant program

Applications are now being accepted for a state grant program that promotes the rehabilitation and new development of parks and recreation facilities, according to Senator Bob Mensch (R-Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery & Northampton). The Department of Community and Economic Development Department will accept applications for the current round of C2P2 Community Recreation and Conservation grants until 4 p.m. on April 21. C2P2 grants are awarded to municipalities and authorized nonprofit organizations for recreation, park and conservation projects including acquisition of land for active or passive park and conservation purposes for planning and feasibility studies.
Most projects require a 50 percent match except for some technical assistance grants and development projects eligible as small community projects whose total project cost is $60,000 or less.

February 11th thru April 19th - Ursinus Francophone Film Festival

Ursinus Francophone Film Festival at Ursinus College will present three films from French-speaking nations during the spring semester.  All films will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium.  The films are subtitled in English, and each film is followed by light refreshments and conversation. For more information, please contact Colette Trout at ctrout@ursinus.edu or 610.409.3000, ext. 2432.  Ursinus College is located on Main Street in Collegeville.
           
The festival opens on Thursday, Feb. 11.  One of the two following films will be shown:
Two Lives Plus One (2007), directed by Idit Cebula.  Elaine Weiss uses her passion for writing to record her parents’ heritage and, in the process, repopulates a world lost to the Holocaust.
Villa Jasmin (2008), directed by Ferid Boughedir.  A search for his roots takes Henry to Tunisia where he learns how his French –Tunisian Jewish parents were affected by the 1940s Vichy Government.
          
On Monday, March 22, Bye Bye (1995), directed by Karim Didri will be screened.   The French-born sons of North African immigrants learn important lessons about life and the nature of friendship and self-accountability.
           
On Monday, April 19, Madame Brouette (2002), directed by Moussa Sene Absa will be shown.  Divorced from an abusive husband, Mati tries love again with Naago.  He is murdered outside her home, and she is the prime suspect.

February 18th thru April 18th - "Drawing the Curtain" opens in The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art

The exhibition Drawing the Curtain opens in The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art Feb. 18 and will run through April 18.

In "Drawing the Curtain," student and faculty co-curators will investigate case studies of censorship within a college museum exhibition that raises questions about the rights of viewers to make their own choices about the images and objects at which they look. 

An opening reception is scheduled in the Upper Gallery Feb. 18, at 4:30 p.m., and will conclude with a "talkback" with the show's curators. Curators include students Jasmine Ellis 2010, Jacqui Bowen 2011, Kayla Federline 2010, Lindsay Knauer 2011, Liora Kuttler 2011 and Emily Smith 2011 (who is studying abroad and will not be able to join the talkback.) Faculty curators are Deborah Barkun, Assistant Professor of Art History, and Susan Shifrin Assistant Professor of Art History and Associate Director for Education at the Museum.

February 19th thru August 1st - American Revolution Center Collection at National Constitution Ctr.

The AMERICAN REVOLUTION CENTER announced that several objects from its collection will be on public display at the National Constituion Center, Philadelphia from 2/19/10 through 8/1/10.  The National Constitution Center opens the world debut of Ancient Rome & America. This 8,000 square foot exhibition features a never-before-seen collection of over 300 artifacts from Italy and the United States, exploring connections between ancient Rome and America.  The works from The ARC's collection are a rare terracotta bust of George Washington, by Philadelphia sculptor William Rush, a Revolutionary War veteran and founder of the PA Academy of the Fine Arts. The exhibit will include the Center's iconic 1854 painting "George Washington at Prayer at Valley Forge" by Lambert Sachs, an immigrant German artist who worked in Philadelphia and exhibited at the Academy.

March 11th - Taste of Home Cooking & Trade Show

March 12th - Seminar on Introduction to Spaced Retrieval

VILLA AT MORLATTON, a retirement community located in Douglassville, will offer a seminar on Introduction to Spaced Retrieval, an intervention for working with people diagnosed with dementia on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. Please join us for this informational seminar and training on what spaced retrieval is, how it can be effective, and simple techniques to use at home. HCR ManorCare will present this event, which is free and open to the public. This event will be held in the Assisted Living Building, 1152 Ben Franklin Highway East, Douglassville. March 13th - Let's Go Green on Main Street

The Collegeville Main Street Program (CMSP) Promotions Committee says, “Let’s Go Green on Main Street” on Saturday, March 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The event celebrates St. Patrick’s Day among Main Street businesses and the “green” activity of recycling.  Main Street visitors can stop, shop and recycle at participating businesses.   Ten bins, identifiable by their labels and bright St. Patrick’s Day balloons will be located on the Main Street in front of the shops.  Recyclers can deposit cans, bottles, paper and plastics in the bins.  Household batteries will only be accepted at Greenwald Flower and Plant Workshop and dried paint cans can be recycled at Collegeville Home (Benjamin Moore).  Frank Sautner of DaVinci’s Pub invites everyone to end the day by stopping in to enjoy a mug of green beer.  Sláinte!  That’s cheers in Irish Gaelic.  Participating businesses include Whitby Jewelers, Appearances Salon, The Dance Depot, The Irish Shop, Collegeville Home, Inc. March 17th - Picasso, and the Avant-Garde at Lower Providence Community Library

Come to the Lower Providence Community Library for a digitally illustrated lecture presented by a museum guide.
The exhibition follows the trajectory of Picasso’s career from his early experiments with abstraction to his pioneering role in the development of Cubism, as well as his dialogue with Surrealism and other important art movements in the ensuing decades. The exhibition will also explore the important role that the city of Paris played in the history of modern art during the first half of the twentieth century, when artists from around the world followed Picasso’s example and moved to the French capital. It will include works by expatriate artists like Marc Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz, Patrick Henry Bruce, and Man Ray, who collectively formed a vibrant, international avant-garde group known, for posterity, as the School of Paris.  Event is free and registration Requested: 610-666-6640 or mwadsworth@mclinc.org

March 22nd thru April 12th - Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy

Spring is coming and preschoolers are invited to join the PERKIOMEN WATERSHED CONSERVANCY for “Spring Surprises!”  This series of four classes will be held on Mondays, March 22, 29, April 5, & 12 from 9:30 – 11:00 am, and is perfect for welcoming this season of rebirth!  Buds will be popping, seeds will be sprouting, and baby animals will start to show up everywhere!  Find out who hatches from eggs, and who is born live.  Meet at the Conservancy’s brownstone barn located just outside Schwenksville at 1 Skippack Pike.  In addition, our classes will feature songs, discovery walks, activities, games, crafts, snacks, and wonderful stories! March 25th - Farmer's Market in Collegeville

Farmers Market on Main Street, Collegeville - the Main Street Program Committee invites those interested to attend the next meeting on March 25th at 6:30 p.m. at Collegeville Borough Hall, 491 E. March 27th - Lower Providence Community Library's 10th Annual Wine Tasting

Join the Spring Fling at the Lower Providence Community Library’s 10th Annual Wine Tasting on Saturday, March 27 from 7:00-10:00 p.m.  Six wines from Italy, New Zealand, and the Pacific Coast will be featured accompanied by a catered light meal provided by Chateau Granieri and Chadwick’s Restaurant & Bar.  Desserts are provided by Collegeville Italian Deli & Market, The Hand Crafted Cookie Company, and Gertrude Hawk Chocolates.  Gift baskets filled with donated items from area businesses will be raffled at the event.

April 9th thru April 11th - Lower Providence Community Library hosts The North Penn S Gaugers

Friday April 9th through Sunday April 11th, the Lower Providence Community Library will host The North Penn S Gaugers.  They will set up and operate a portable S gauge layout for our patrons’ enjoyment and education in our Library’s community room.  Members of the North Penn S Gaugers will be on hand throughout the weekend to answer questions and discuss the history of the S scale trains and the hobby. The North Penn S Gaugers are a diverse group of S gauge enthusiasts formed in 1998, based in Lansdale.  Their interests range from American Flyer through Fine S scale equipment. S scale is considered the ideal size for model trains.  It is 25% larger than HO scale for easier operation and greater detail, but 25% smaller than O scale for greater utilization of space. As usual this program is free and open to the public!

April 26th thru June 14th - SCORE Seminar - How to Start & Operate a Small Business

Pottstown SCORE has scheduled the four-part series “How to Start and Operate a Small Business” which begins Monday, April 26.  This course focuses on how to create a business plan, determine profit, and develop marketing strategies.  The course is taught by 8 experienced members of SCORE and outside practitioners who are recognized as experts in their fields.  On Monday, June 7 local CPA Scott Rakowski will present a course titled “Bookkeeping Basics for a Small Business.”  The  workshop focuses on day to day business transactions of a small business.  “Internet Marketing and Website Design” will be presented on Monday, June 14 by Rick Simmons of Dinkum Interactive in Jenkintown.
